Preparing for Your First Acupuncture Appointment

Preparing for Your First Acupuncture Appointment

1. Wear Lose Fitting Clothes

Many acupuncture points are located on the legs below the knees and the arms below the elbows, so wearing skinny jeans or tight, long-sleeved shirts might make treatment more difficult. If you’re receiving treatment for pain or a specific injury, your acupuncturist may need to examine or treat the affected area directly.
For certain areas, such as the lower back, adjustments to your clothing might be necessary. Wearing layers is a great option to ensure comfort and flexibility during your visit. Rest assured, your acupuncturist will always ensure proper and modest draping to keep you comfortable, warm, and at ease throughout your treatment.

2. Answer Entrance Questions Honestly

Acupuncture is a holistic health therapy, meaning it considers not just your specific concerns but also how your body functions as a whole. When completing your intake forms and during your initial consultation, providing detailed information about your health history, current condition, and lifestyle helps us understand your needs better.

Your acupuncturist will use this comprehensive understanding to design a personalized treatment plan tailored specifically to you.

3. Make sure to eat and drink before appointment

To ensure a comfortable and effective acupuncture session, it’s important to prepare your body properly. Arriving on an empty stomach can make you feel lightheaded or dizzy after treatment. Instead, aim to eat a light meal or snack beforehand—just enough to keep hunger at bay without feeling overly full.

Staying hydrated is equally essential, as proper hydration supports your body’s ability to heal and respond to treatment. Be sure to drink water before your appointment, as it helps maintain circulation and aids in the recovery process. Make sure to avoid caffeine right before your session. Caffeine can increase restlessness and interfere with the calming effects of acupuncture.

4. Don’t be worried about the needles!

Acupuncture needles are incredibly fine—comparable to a cat’s whisker—and completely different from the hypodermic needles you may associate with the doctor’s office. Because of their delicate size, they are often referred to as “pins,” though even that doesn’t quite capture how thin they truly are! While some patients may feel a mild pinch during insertion or a temporary heavy sensation as a point is stimulated, acupuncture is generally a comfortable and relaxing experience.

Rest assured, our needles are sterile, hypoallergenic, and always single-use.

5. Be ready to relax

Acupuncture sessions offer a deeply relaxing experience that feels more like a medical office visit than a spa appointment. After the pins are gently inserted into specific acupuncture points, you’ll relax on the table, creating an ideal opportunity to clear your mind, meditate, or even take a nap. Many people enter a profound state of relaxation where deep healing can occur. Each 90-minute session includes an initial exam and case history, followed by a treatment, with optional amenities like vibro-acoustic therapy, a table warmer, and a weightless blanket to enhance your comfort.
